That which is without-name is the beginning of heaven and

earth.

地の始まりなり。

That which possesses a name is the mother of the ten

名あるものは、万物の

thousand creatures.

母なり。

Therefore : always without-desire, thus you observe its

故に、常に無欲にして、その

subtle mystery.

妙を観る。

Always possessing desires, thus you observe its external
JA
常に有欲にして、その

appearances.
JA
徼を観る。
EN
These two, they arise from the same source but have
JA
この二つは同じ源より出でて、

different names;
JA
名を異にす。
EN
This sameness is called their deep mystery.
JA
同じきをこれ玄と謂う。

Deep mysteries, and again deep mysteries –
JA
玄のまた玄、

The gateway of many subtle mysteries.
