In the world, when all know that the action of beauty is

天下みな美の美たるを知れば、

beautiful, then ugliness ensues.
JA
斯れ悪のみ。
EN
When all know that the action of good is goodness, then
JA
みな善の善たるを知れば、
EN
not-good ensues.
JA
斯れ不善のみ。
EN
Therefore : being and non-being create each other,
JA
故に、有と無は互いに生じ、
EN
Difficult and easy complete each other,
JA
難と易は互いに成し、
EN
Long and short contrast each other,
JA
長と短は互いに形づくり、
EN
High and low lean on each other,
JA
高と下は互いに傾き、
EN
Tone and voice harmonize each other,
JA
音と声は互いに和し、
EN
Before and after follow each other.
JA
前と後は互いに随う。
EN
Thus the sage :
JA
ここをもって聖人は、
EN
Lives by using non-action in his duties,
JA
無為をもって事に処し、
EN
And practicing no-talking in his teachings.
JA
不言の教えを行う。
EN
The ten thousand creatures arise, but do not have a
JA
万物作りて
EN
beginning.
JA
始めあらず。
EN
Creating but not possessing;
JA
生じて有せず、
EN
Acting, but not concerned with the results;
JA
為して恃まず、
EN
Accomplishing tasks, but not dwelling on them.
JA
功成りて居らず。
EN
Now : only because there is no dwelling,
JA
それただ居らず、
EN
Thus the results do not depart.
JA
故に去らず。
