The five colors can make people’s eyes blind.

五色は人の目をして盲ならしむ。

The five tones can make people’s ears deaf.

五音は人の耳をして聾ならしむ。

The five flavors can make people’s mouths dull.
JA
五味は人の口をして爽ならしむ。

Excessive hunting and horse racing can make people’s

馳騁田猟は、人の心をして

heart/minds become wild.
JA
狂を発せしむ。
EN
Rare goods can make people’s behavior corrupt.
JA
得難きの貨は、人の行いをして妨ならしむ。
EN
Thus the sage :

ここをもって聖人は、

Acts on what is inside, he does not act on what he sees.
JA
腹を為して目を為さず。
EN
Therefore he leaves that and chooses this.
JA
故にかれを去りてこれを取る。
