貴きは大患なり、身あるがごとし。

何をか寵辱は驚くがごとしと謂う。

Favor makes you the inferior, so gaining it seems alarming.

寵は下たり、これを得るも驚くがごとく、

Losing it also seems alarming.

これを失うも驚くがごとし。

This is what is meant by “favor and disgrace seem

何をか貴きは大患なり、

身あるがごとしと謂う。

われに大患ある所以は、われに身あるが

ためなり。

When I am without a self, how could I have suffering?

われに身なくんば、われに何の患いかあらん。

Therefore : he who is high ranking and uses his self to

故に、貴くして身をもって天下に

It seems he can thus be entrusted with the world!

すなわち天下を以て寄すべし。
