第二十一章

The greatest De is possible only when Dao is followed.

大いなる徳の容は、ただ道に従うのみ。

The action of Dao on creatures is just indistinct, just

道の物たる、ただ恍、

confusing.

ただ惚。

Confusing! and indistinct!, within it exists image.
JA
惚たり恍たり、その中に象あり。
EN
Indistinct! and confusing!, within it exists things.
JA
恍たり惚たり、その中に物あり。
EN
Obscure! and dark!, within it exists essence.
JA
窈たり冥たり、その中に精あり。
EN
Its essence is extremely real and true.
JA
その精甚だ真にして、

Within it exists truth.
JA
その中に信あり。
EN
From the present, reaching to antiquity,
JA
今より古に及ぶまで、

Its name has not departed –
JA
その名は去らず。
EN
Thus I observe the father of the multitudes.
JA
以て衆甫を観る。
EN
How do I thus know the father of the multitudes is like
JA
われ何をもって衆甫の
EN
this?
JA
かくのごときを知るや。

By means of this.
