第三十章

He who uses Dao to assist the master of the people
JA
道を以て人主を佐くる者は、

Does not use weapons or strength on the world,
JA
兵を以て天下に強くせず、
EN
For his troubles would likely return –
JA
その事は好く還る。

In the dwelling places of armies, thorns and brambles are
JA
師の処る所には
EN
produced,
JA
荊棘生じ、
EN
And so what is left behind a great army must have a bad
JA
大軍の後には必ず
EN
year.
JA
凶年あり。
EN
He who has virtue gets results and stops.
JA
善き者は果たして已む。
EN
He does not dare to take by using strength.
JA
敢えて以て強を取らず。
EN
He gets results, but never brags.
JA
果たして矜らず、
EN
Gets results, but never boasts.
JA
果たして伐らず、
EN
Gets results, but is not arrogant.
JA
果たして驕らず、
EN
Gets results, but only when he has no choice.
JA
果たしてやむを得ざるなり。
EN
Gets results, but never uses strength.
JA
果たして強からず。
EN
When creatures are robust but old,
JA
物は壮なれば則ち老ゆ、
EN
This is called “not Dao”.
JA
これを不道と謂う。
EN
That which is “not Dao” has an early finish.
JA
不道は早く已む。
