Of those who in ancient times attained oneness :

昔、一を得たる者あり。

Heaven attained oneness, thus becoming pure and clear.
JA
天は一を得て以て清し。
EN
Earth attained oneness, thus becoming stable.
JA
地は一を得て以て寧し。
EN
Spirit attained oneness, thus becoming potent.
JA
神は一を得て以て霊なり。
EN
The valley attained oneness, thus becoming full.
JA
谷は一を得て以て盈つ。
EN
The ten thousand creatures attained oneness, thus
JA
万物は一を得て以て
EN
becoming alive.
JA
生ず。
EN
Nobles and kings attained oneness, thus serving the world
JA
侯王は一を得て以て天下の
EN
faithfully.
JA
貞と為る。
EN
They attained it.
JA
その致すや、
EN
If heaven could not use its purity and clarity,
JA
天もし清きことを得ざれば、
EN
I fear it would split apart.
JA
恐らくは裂けん。
EN
If earth could not use its stability,
JA
地もし寧きことを得ざれば、
EN
I fear it would erupt.
JA
恐らくは発せん。
EN
If spirit could not use its potency,
JA
神もし霊なることを得ざれば、
EN
I fear it would cease to be.
JA
恐らくは歇まん。
EN
If the valley could not use its fullness,
JA
谷もし盈つることを得ざれば、
EN
I fear it would be used up.
JA
恐らくは竭きん。
EN
If the ten thousand creatures could not use their life,
JA
万物もし生ずることを得ざれば、
EN
I fear they would be destroyed.
JA
恐らくは滅びん。
EN
If nobles and kings could not use their high rank and
JA
侯王もし貞く貴きことを
EN
prominence,
JA
得ざれば、
EN
I fear they would fall.
JA
恐らくは蹶れん。
EN
Therefore : humility thus serves as the source of high rank;
JA
故に貴きは賤しきを以て本と為し、
EN
Low thus serves as the foundation of high.
JA
高きは下きを以て基と為す。
EN
Thus nobles and kings call themselves orphaned, lonely,
JA
ここを以て侯王は自ら孤、寡、
EN
and unlucky.
JA
不穀と称す。
EN
Does this not mean that humility thus serves as the source?
JA
これ賤しきを以て本と為すにあらずや。
EN
Does it not?
JA
しからずや。
EN
Therefore : to attain exceptional popularity is to be without
JA
故に輿の誉を致して
EN
popularity –
JA
輿なし。
EN
Do not desire to be scarce like jade,
JA
琭琭たること玉のごとくなるを欲せず、
EN
But common like rock.
JA
珞珞たること石のごとくなれ。
