Dao is like a cup or bowl, yet use it and there exists no

道は盅のごとく、用いて

need to fill it.

盈たざるなり。

Profound and deep!, it appears to be the ancestor of the ten

淵なるかな、万物の宗に

thousand creatures.

似たり。
EN
It blunts their sharpness,

その鋭を挫き、

Loosens their tangles,
JA
その紛を解き、
EN
Softens their brightness,
JA
その光を和らげ、
EN
Makes them the same as the dust of the world.
JA
その塵に同ず。
EN
Deep and profound!, it seems to barely exist.
JA
湛なるかな、存するに似たり。
EN
I do not know whose child it is –
JA
われその誰の子なるかを知らず、
EN
Its image came before that of god.
JA
帝の先に象る。
