The average scholar hearing of Dao seems to keep it,

中士は道を聞けば、

seems to lose it.
JA
あるがごとくなきがごとし。

The inferior scholar hearing of Dao laughs greatly at it.
JA
下士は道を聞けば、大いにこれを笑う。

If he did not laugh, it would not be qualified to be Dao.
JA
笑わざれば以て道と為すに足らず。

Therefore : in the established sayings that exist, it is said –

故に建言に之れあり、

Insight into Dao seems like darkness.
JA
明道は暗きがごとし。

Advancing in Dao seems like retreating.
JA
進道は退くがごとし。
EN
Smooth Dao seems knotted.
JA
夷道は纇のごとし。

Superior De seems like a valley.
JA
上徳は谷のごとし。
EN
The greatest purity seems like disgrace.
JA
大白は辱のごとし。
EN
The most extensive De seems like it is not enough.
JA
広徳は足らざるがごとし。
EN
Established De seems aimless.
JA
建徳は偸のごとし。
EN
Real and true character seems inconsistent.
JA
質真は渝るがごとし。
EN
The greatest region is without borders.
JA
大方は隅なし。
EN
The greatest vessel is last to be completed.
JA
大器は晩成す。
EN
The greatest tone is a tenuous sound.
JA
大音は希声なり。
EN
The greatest image is without-form.
JA
大象は無形なり。
EN
Dao is hidden and without-name.
JA
道は隠れて名なし。
EN
Now : only Dao is good at beginning and also good at
JA
それ唯だ道は善く貸し

completing.

且つ成す。
