第五十三章
EN
If I correctly use the tiniest bit of knowledge that I possess

使我介然として知あらば、

While travelling on the great Way,
JA
大道を行くに、
EN
It is only walking off the path that I need to fear.
JA
唯だ迤なるを畏るるのみ。
EN
The great Way is extremely even,
JA
大道は甚だ夷なるも、
EN
But the citizens are fond of side paths.
JA
民は径を好む。
EN
Although the royal court is very well-kept,
JA
朝は甚だ除にして、
EN
The fields are very overgrown with weeds,
JA
田は甚だ蕪れ、
EN
The granaries are very empty.
JA
倉は甚だ虚し。
EN
While at the court they wear refined multicolored silks,
JA
文綵を服し、
EN
Carry sharp swords,
JA
利剣を帯び、
EN
Stuff themselves with drink and food,
JA
飲食に厭き、
EN
And have an excess of wealth and goods.
JA
財貨余りあり。
EN
This is called robbery and extravagance,
JA
これを盗夸と謂う。
EN
Not Dao, indeed!!
JA
道にあらざるかな。
