Chapter I: The Right to be Rich

第一章：富裕になる権利

Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.

貧困を称賛してどのようなことが言われようとも、裕福でなければ本当に完全で成功した人生を送ることはできないという事実は変わりません。十分なお金がなければ、才能や魂の発達において最大限の高みに到達することはできません。なぜなら、魂を開花させ才能を伸ばすためには、使うべき多くのものが必要であり、それらを買うためのお金がなければ、それらを手に入れることができないからです。

Man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.

人間は物事を活用することによって精神、魂、そして身体を発達させます。そして社会は、人間が物事の所有者になるためにはお金を持たなければならないように組織されています。したがって、人間のあらゆる進歩の基盤は、裕福になる科学でなければなりません。

The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.

すべての生命の目的は発達です。そして、生きとし生けるものはすべて、到達し得るすべての発達に対する不可侵の権利を持っています。

Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.

人間の生きる権利とは、精神的、霊的、そして身体的に最大限に開花するために必要なすべてのものを、自由かつ制限なく使用する権利を意味します。言い換えれば、裕福になる権利です。

In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

本書では、富について比喩的に語ることはしません。本当に裕福であるということは、わずかなもので満足することではありません。もっと多くを活用し享受する能力があるのに、わずかなもので満足すべき人間はいません。自然の目的は生命の進歩と開花です。そして、すべての人間は、生命の力、優雅さ、美しさ、そして豊かさに貢献し得るすべてを持つべきです。それ以下で満足することは罪深いことです。

The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants. Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Every person naturally wants to become all that he is capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them. To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.

自分が生きることのできるすべての人生を送るために必要なものをすべて所有している人は裕福です。そして、十分なお金を持っていなければ、欲しいものをすべて手に入れることはできません。人生はこれほどまでに進歩し複雑になったので、最も平凡な男性や女性でさえ、完全に近い生活を送るためには膨大な富を必要とします。すべての人間は、自分がなり得るすべてのものになりたいと自然に望みます。生まれ持った可能性を実現したいというこの欲求は、人間の本性に内在するものです。私たちは、自分がなり得るすべてのものになりたいと望まずにはいられません。人生における成功とは、なりたいものになることです。なりたいものになるには物事を活用するしかなく、物事を自由に使えるようになるのは、それらを買えるほど裕福になったときだけです。したがって、裕福になる科学を理解することは、あらゆる知識の中で最も不可欠なものです。

There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich. The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praiseworthy. The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal.

裕福になりたいと望むことに何の間違いもありません。富への欲求とは、実はより豊かで、より充実した、より溢れるばかりの人生への欲求です。そしてその欲求は称賛に値するものです。より豊かに生きたいと望まない人は異常であり、欲しいものすべてを買えるだけのお金を望まない人もまた異常です。

There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, and we live for the soul. No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three—body, mind, or soul—can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression. It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body and soul.

私たちが生きる動機は三つあります。身体のために生き、精神のために生き、そして魂のために生きます。これらのどれ一つとして他より優れていたり神聖であったりすることはありません。すべて等しく望ましいものであり、身体、精神、魂の三つのうちどれ一つとして、他のいずれかが十分な生命と表現を奪われたならば、完全に生きることはできません。魂のためだけに生きて精神や身体を否定することは正しくも崇高でもありません。そして、知性のために生きて身体と魂を否定することも間違いです。

We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul. Whatever he may say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul. Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire. Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.

身体のためだけに生きて精神と魂の両方を否定することの忌まわしい結果は、私たちも十分承知しています。そして、真の人生とは、人間が身体、精神、そして魂を通じて発することのできるすべてを完全に表現することであるとわかります。何を言おうとも、身体がすべての機能において十分に生きておらず、精神と魂についても同様でなければ、人は本当に幸福で満足することはできません。表現されていない可能性や遂行されていない機能があるところには、満たされていない欲求があります。欲求とは、表現を求める可能性であり、遂行を求める機能です。

Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil. Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life.

良い食べ物、快適な衣服、そして暖かい住まいがなければ、また過度な労働からの解放がなければ、人間は身体において十分に生きることはできません。休息と娯楽もまた、身体的な生活に必要なものです。

He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.

書物とそれを学ぶ時間がなければ、旅行や観察の機会がなければ、また知的な交友関係がなければ、人間は精神において十分に生きることはできません。

To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.

精神において十分に生きるためには、知的な娯楽を持ち、自分が活用し鑑賞し得るすべての芸術品や美しいものに囲まれていなければなりません。

To live fully in soul, man must have love; and love is denied expression by poverty.

魂において十分に生きるためには、人間には愛が必要です。そして愛は、貧困によってその表現を妨げられるのです。

Man’s highest happiness is found in the bestowal of benefits on those he loves; love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving. The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man. It is in the use of material things that man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul. It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich.

人間の最高の幸福は、愛する人々に恩恵を与えることにあります。愛はその最も自然で自発的な表現を、与えることに見出します。与えるものが何もない人は、夫として、父として、市民として、また一人の人間として、自分の役割を果たすことができません。物質的なものの活用において、人間は身体のための完全な生活を見出し、精神を発達させ、魂を開花させるのです。したがって、裕福であることは人間にとって最も重要なことです。

It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so. It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies. If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God, and to humanity; for you can render God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.

裕福になりたいと望むことは、まったくもって正しいことです。あなたが正常な男性または女性であれば、そう望まずにはいられないはずです。裕福になる科学に最大限の注意を払うことは、まったくもって正しいことです。なぜなら、それはすべての学問の中で最も崇高で最も必要なものだからです。この学問を怠るなら、あなたは自分自身に対して、神に対して、そして人類に対する義務を怠っていることになります。なぜなら、自分自身を最大限に活かすこと以上に、神と人類に提供できる偉大な奉仕はないからです。
