Chapter II: There is a Science of Getting Rich

第二章：裕福になる科学は存在する

There is a Science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches; once these laws are learned and obeyed by any man, he will get rich with mathematical certainty.

裕福になる科学は存在します。そしてそれは、代数学や算術と同じように、厳密な科学です。富を獲得する過程を支配する一定の法則があります。ひとたびこれらの法則を学び従えば、誰でも数学的な確実さをもって裕福になるのです。

The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich; while those who do not do things in this Certain Way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor.

お金と財産の所有は、物事をある特定のやり方で行った結果として生じます。この「特定のやり方」で物事を行う人は、意図的であれ偶然であれ裕福になります。一方、この「特定のやり方」で物事を行わない人は、どんなに懸命に働いても、どんなに有能であっても、貧しいままです。

It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects; and, therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this Certain Way will infallibly get rich.

同じ原因は常に同じ結果を生むというのは自然法則です。したがって、この「特定のやり方」で物事を行うことを学んだ男性も女性も、必ず裕福になります。

That the above statement is true is shown by the following facts:—

上記の記述が真実であることは、以下の事実によって示されます。

Getting rich is not a matter of environment, for, if it were, all the people in certain neighborhoods would become wealthy; the people of one city would all be rich, while those of other towns would all be poor; or the inhabitants of one state would roll in wealth, while those of an adjoining state would be in poverty.

裕福になることは環境の問題ではありません。もしそうであるなら、特定の地域のすべての人々が裕福になるはずです。ある都市の人々はみな裕福になり、別の町の人々はみな貧しくなるはずです。あるいは、ある州の住民は富に恵まれ、隣接する州の住民は貧困に陥るはずです。

But everywhere we see rich and poor living side by side, in the same environment, and often engaged in the same vocations. When two men are in the same locality, and in the same business, and one gets rich while the other remains poor, it shows that getting rich is not, primarily, a matter of environment. Some environments may be more favorable than others, but when two men in the same business are in the same neighborhood, and one gets rich while the other fails, it indicates that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

しかし、どこを見ても、富める者と貧しい者が同じ環境の中で隣り合って暮らし、しばしば同じ職業に従事しています。二人の人間が同じ場所で同じ事業をしていて、一方が裕福になり他方が貧しいままであるとき、それは裕福になることが主として環境の問題ではないことを示しています。ある環境が他より有利であることはあるかもしれませんが、同じ事業を営む二人が同じ地域にいて、一方が裕福になり他方が失敗するとき、それは裕福になることが物事を「特定のやり方」で行った結果であることを示しています。

And further, the ability to do things in this Certain Way is not due solely to the possession of talent, for many people who have great talent remain poor, while others who have very little talent get rich.

さらに、この「特定のやり方」で物事を行う能力は、才能の有無だけによるものではありません。大きな才能を持ちながら貧しいままの人が多くいる一方、ごくわずかな才能しか持たないのに裕福になる人もいるからです。

Studying the people who have got rich, we find that they are an average lot in all respects, having no greater talents and abilities than other men. It is evident that they do not get rich because they possess talents and abilities that other men have not, but because they happen to do things in a Certain Way.

裕福になった人々を研究してみると、彼らはあらゆる面で平均的な人々であり、他の人々より優れた才能や能力を持っていないことがわかります。彼らが裕福になるのは、他の人々にはない才能や能力を持っているからではなく、たまたま物事を「特定のやり方」で行っているからであることは明らかです。

Getting rich is not the result of saving, or “thrift”; many very penurious people are poor, while free spenders often get rich.

裕福になることは倹約や「節約」の結果ではありません。非常に吝嗇な人でも貧しい人は多く、一方、気前よくお金を使う人がしばしば裕福になります。

Nor is getting rich due to doing things which others fail to do; for two men in the same business often do almost exactly the same things, and one gets rich while the other remains poor or becomes a bankrupt.

裕福になることは、他の人がしないことをすることによるものでもありません。なぜなら、同じ事業を営む二人が、ほとんどまったく同じことをしていることがしばしばあり、それでも一方が裕福になり、他方が貧しいままであったり破産したりするからです。

From all these things, we must come to the conclusion that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

これらすべてのことから、裕福になることは物事を「特定のやり方」で行った結果であるという結論に達しなければなりません。

If getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way, and if like causes always produce like effects, then any man or woman who can do things in that way can become rich, and the whole matter is brought within the domain of exact science.

裕福になることが物事を「特定のやり方」で行った結果であり、同じ原因が常に同じ結果を生むのであれば、その方法で物事を行うことのできる男性も女性も裕福になることができ、この問題全体が厳密科学の領域に入ることになります。

The question arises here, whether this Certain Way may not be so difficult that only a few may follow it. This cannot be true, as we have seen, so far as natural ability is concerned. Talented people get rich, and blockheads get rich; intellectually brilliant people get rich, and very stupid people get rich; physically strong people get rich, and weak and sickly people get rich.

ここで、この「特定のやり方」はごく少数の人しか実行できないほど難しいのではないかという疑問が生じます。しかし、これまで見てきたように、生まれ持った能力に関する限り、それは真実ではあり得ません。才能のある人も裕福になり、愚かな人も裕福になります。知的に優秀な人も裕福になり、非常に頭の悪い人も裕福になります。身体的に強い人も裕福になり、弱く病弱な人も裕福になります。

Some degree of ability to think and understand is, of course, essential; but in so far as natural ability is concerned, any man or woman who has sense enough to read and understand these words can certainly get rich.

ある程度の思考力と理解力はもちろん不可欠です。しかし、生まれ持った能力に関する限り、これらの言葉を読んで理解できるだけの知性を持つ男性や女性であれば、間違いなく裕福になることができます。

Also, we have seen that it is not a matter of environment. Location counts for something; one would not go to the heart of the Sahara and expect to do successful business.

また、これまで見てきたように、環境の問題でもありません。場所にはある程度の意味がありますが、サハラ砂漠のど真ん中に行って成功する事業を期待するような人はいないでしょう。

Getting rich involves the necessity of dealing with men, and of being where there are people to deal with; and if these people are inclined to deal in the way you want to deal, so much the better. But that is about as far as environment goes.

裕福になるには、人々と取引し、取引すべき人々がいる場所にいる必要があります。そして、それらの人々があなたが望む方法で取引する傾向があるなら、それに越したことはありません。しかし、環境が関係するのはその程度までです。

If anybody else in your town can get rich, so can you; and if anybody else in your state can get rich, so can you.

あなたの町で他の誰かが裕福になれるのなら、あなたにもできます。あなたの州で他の誰かが裕福になれるのなら、あなたにもできるのです。

Again, it is not a matter of choosing some particular business or profession. People get rich in every business, and in every profession; while their next door neighbors in the same vocation remain in poverty.

繰り返しますが、特定の事業や職業を選ぶことの問題でもありません。あらゆる事業で、あらゆる職業で人々は裕福になっています。一方、同じ職業に就いている隣人は貧困のままです。

It is true that you will do best in a business which you like, and which is congenial to you; and if you have certain talents which are well developed, you will do best in a business which calls for the exercise of those talents.

自分の好きな、性に合った事業で最もうまくいくことは事実です。そして、十分に発達した特定の才能があるなら、それらの才能の発揮を求める事業で最もうまくいくでしょう。

Also, you will do best in a business which is suited to your locality; an ice-cream parlor would do better in a warm climate than in Greenland, and a salmon fishery will succeed better in the Northwest than in Florida, where there are no salmon.

また、あなたの地域に適した事業で最もうまくいきます。アイスクリームパーラーはグリーンランドよりも温暖な気候の方が繁盛するでしょうし、サケ漁業はサケのいないフロリダよりも北西部の方がうまくいくでしょう。

But, aside from these general limitations, getting rich is not dependent upon your engaging in some particular business, but upon your learning to do things in a Certain Way. If you are now in business, and anybody else in your locality is getting rich in the same business, while you are not getting rich, it is because you are not doing things in the same Way that the other person is doing them.

しかし、これらの一般的な制約を除けば、裕福になることは特定の事業に従事することに依存するのではなく、物事を「特定のやり方」で行うことを学ぶことに依存するのです。もしあなたが今事業を営んでいて、あなたの地域で他の誰かが同じ事業で裕福になっているのに、あなたが裕福になっていないとしたら、それはあなたがその他の人と同じやり方で物事を行っていないからです。

No one is prevented from getting rich by lack of capital. True, as you get capital the increase becomes more easy and rapid; but one who has capital is already rich, and does not need to consider how to become so. No matter how poor you may be, if you begin to do things in the Certain Way you will begin to get rich; and you will begin to have capital. The getting of capital is a part of the process of getting rich; and it is a part of the result which invariably follows the doing of things in the Certain Way.

資本の不足によって裕福になることを妨げられる人はいません。確かに、資本を得ればその増加はより容易で急速になります。しかし、資本を持っている人はすでに裕福であり、どうやって裕福になるかを考える必要はありません。どんなに貧しくても、「特定のやり方」で物事を行い始めれば、裕福になり始めます。そして資本を持ち始めるでしょう。資本の獲得は裕福になる過程の一部であり、物事を「特定のやり方」で行うことから必然的に生じる結果の一部なのです。

You may be the poorest man on the continent, and be deeply in debt; you may have neither friends, influence, nor resources; but if you begin to do things in this Way, you must infallibly begin to get rich, for like causes must produce like effects. If you have no capital, you can get capital; if you are in the wrong business, you can get into the right business; if you are in the wrong location, you can go to the right location; and you can do so by beginning in your present business and in your present location to do things in the Certain Way which causes success.

あなたは大陸で最も貧しい人であり、深い借金を抱えているかもしれません。友人も、影響力も、資源もないかもしれません。しかし、この方法で物事を行い始めれば、必ず裕福になり始めるのです。なぜなら、同じ原因は同じ結果を生まなければならないからです。資本がなければ資本を得ることができます。間違った事業をしているなら正しい事業に移ることができます。間違った場所にいるなら正しい場所に行くことができます。そしてそれは、今の事業で今の場所において、成功をもたらす「特定のやり方」で物事を行い始めることによってできるのです。
