The virtue of the ancients made they who were scholars

古の善く士たる者は、

subtle, mysterious, obscure, deep, and penetrating.
JA
微妙玄通にして深くして識るべからず。
EN
Their mysterious depths can not be understood.
JA
その深さは識るべからず。
EN
Now : only because they can not be understood,
JA
それ唯だ識るべからず、
EN
Therefore we try to emulate their appearance :
JA
故に強いてこれが容を為さん。
EN
Hesitant!, as if crossing a winter stream.
JA
予として冬に川を渉るがごとく、
EN
Wary!, as if afraid of their neighbors all around.
JA
猶として四隣を畏るるがごとく、
EN
Respectful!, they are like a visiting guest.
JA
儼としてそれ客たるがごとく、
EN
Yielding!, like ice that is about to to break off.
JA
渙として氷の将に釈けんとするがごとく、
EN
Honest and genuine!, they are like the uncarved block.
JA
敦としてそれ朴のごとく、
EN
Wide and open!, they are like a valley.
JA
曠としてそれ谷のごとく、
EN
Unclear!, they are like muddy water.
JA
混としてそれ濁のごとし。
EN
Who can take muddy water and use stillness to slowly and
JA
孰かよく濁を以て静にして、
EN
gently make it pure and clear?
JA
これを徐に清くせん。
EN
Who can take what is tranquil and use continual movement
JA
孰かよく安を以て動にして、
EN
to slowly and gently bring it to life?
JA
これを徐に生ぜしめん。
EN
He who maintains this Way does not desire to be full.
JA
この道を保つ者は盈つることを欲せず。
EN
Now : only because he is not full,
JA
それ唯だ盈たず、
EN
Thus he can be hidden and unfinished.
JA
故によく蔽いて新たに成らず。
