Maintain a profound stillness.

静を守ること篤し。

The ten thousand creatures arise in unison,

万物並び作る、

And thus I observe their return.

吾以てその復を観る。

Now : all the myriad creatures return to their source.

それ物は芸芸たるも、おのおのその根に復帰す。

Returning to the source speaks of stillness.

根に帰るを静と曰い、

Stillness is called returning to the natural order.
JA
静なるを命に復ると曰う。
EN
Returning to the natural order speaks of the ever-constant.
JA
命に復るを常と曰い、
EN
Knowing the ever-constant speaks of insight.
JA
常を知るを明と曰う。
EN
Not knowing the ever-constant is foolish and creates

常を知らざれば、妄りに作りて

misfortune.

凶なり。
EN
Knowing the ever-constant leads to tolerance.
JA
常を知れば容なり。
EN
Being tolerant leads to being just and unbiased.
JA
容なれば公なり。
EN
Being just and unbiased leads to being kingly.
JA
公なれば王なり。
EN
Being kingly leads to heaven.
JA
王なれば天なり。
EN
Heaven leads to Dao.
JA
天なれば道なり。
EN
Dao leads to what endures.
JA
道なれば久し。
EN
When the self disappears, there can be no danger.
JA
身を没するまで殆うからず。
