第十九章
EN
Renounce sacredness, abandon wisdom,
JA
聖を絶ち智を棄つれば、
EN
And the citizens benefit 100-fold.
JA
民の利百倍す。
EN
Renounce kindness, abandon morality,
JA
仁を絶ち義を棄つれば、
EN
And the citizens return to being devoted children and
JA
民は孝慈に
EN
loving parents.
JA
復る。
EN
Renounce cleverness, abandon profit,
JA
巧を絶ち利を棄つれば、
EN
And thieves and bandits will not exist.
JA
盗賊あることなし。
EN
These three things thus make a civilized society, but are not
JA
この三つは以て文とするも
EN
enough.
JA
足らず。
EN
Therefore : to ensure the citizens have a place to belong –
JA
故に民の属する所あらしめよ。
EN
See the simplicity,
JA
素を見し、
EN
Embrace the concept of the uncarved block,
JA
朴を抱き、
EN
Less selfishness,
JA
私を少なくし、
EN
Fewer desires.
JA
欲を寡なくせよ。
