猛獣もこれを拠えず、

Birds of prey do not claw him.

攫鳥もこれを搏たず。

His bones are weak, his muscles are soft, yet his grasp is

骨は弱く筋は柔なるも、

firm and strong.

その握ること固し。

He has not yet known the union of female and male, yet his

未だ牝牡の合を知らずして、

その朘作る。

He has the utmost essence, indeed!

精の至りなればなり。

終日号びて嗄れず、

和の至りなればなり。

Knowing harmony speaks of the ever-constant.

和を知るを常と曰い、

Knowing the ever-constant speaks of insight.

常を知るを明と曰う。

Benefitting life speaks of good fortune.
JA
生を益すを祥と曰い、

Heart/mind making Qi speaks of strength.
JA
心の気を使うを強と曰う。
EN
When creatures are robust but old,
JA
物は壮なれば則ち老ゆ、

We call them “not Dao”.
JA
これを不道と謂う。
EN
That which is “not Dao” has an early finish.
JA
不道は早く已む。
