Misfortune! is that which good fortune leans on.

禍は福の倚る所なり。

Good fortune! is that which misfortune lies on.
JA
福は禍の伏す所なり。

Who knows their limits?
JA
孰かその極を知らん。
EN
They are not honest and just.
JA
その正なし。
EN
Honesty and justness returns, becoming strange and
JA
正は復た奇と
EN
unusual.
JA
為り、
EN
Virtue returns, becoming weird and strange.
JA
善は復た妖と為る。
EN
The confusion of the people –
JA
人の迷い、
EN
Its days have indeed been everlasting.
JA
その日固に久し。
EN
Thus the sage :

ここをもって聖人は、
EN
Is honest and does not divide,
JA
方なるも割かず、
EN
Is honorable and does not injure,
JA
廉なるも刿らず、
EN
Is straightforward and does not indulge in excess,
JA
直なるも肆ならず、
EN
Is bright but does not dazzle.
JA
光あるも耀かず。
