That which Daos is the obscure mystery of the ten thousand

道は万物の

creatures.
JA
奥なり。
EN
This is the treasure of a virtuous person,
JA
善人の宝にして、
EN
And that which is the protection of a person who is not
JA
不善人の
EN
virtuous.
JA
保つ所なり。
EN
Beautiful speech can be used in the market,
JA
美言は以て市すべし。
EN
Respectful behavior can benefit people.
JA
尊行は以て人に加うべし。
EN
People who are not virtuous,
JA
人の不善なる、
EN
Why abandon them?
JA
何ぞこれを棄てることあらん。
EN
Therefore : when inaugurating the son of heaven,
JA
故に天子を立て
EN
Or installing the three nobles –
JA
三公を置くに、
EN
Even if you possessed jade disks drawn by a team of four
JA
拱璧を有して駟馬に
EN
horses,
JA
先だつと雖も、
EN
That is not as good as sitting and offering this Way.
JA
坐してこの道を進むるに如かず。
EN
What was the ancients’ reason that they valued this Way?
JA
古のこの道を貴ぶ所以は何ぞ。
EN
Did they not say :
JA
曰わずや、
EN
Seek in order to obtain,
JA
求むれば以て得、
EN
Have faults in order to be forgiven?
JA
罪あれば以て免ると。
EN
Therefore Dao becomes valuable to the world.
JA
故に天下の貴となる。
