第六十五章
EN
The virtue of the ancients (they who acted in Dao),
JA
古の善く道を為す者は、

Did not use it to enlighten the citizens,
JA
以て民を明らかにするにあらず、
EN
But would have used it to keep them ignorant –
JA
将にこれを愚にせんとするなり。
EN
The citizens are hard to govern
JA
民の治め難きは、
EN
Because they have too much knowledge.
JA
その智多きを以てなり。
EN
Therefore : using knowledge to govern the nation
JA
故に智を以て国を治むるは、
EN
Is the bane of the nation.
JA
国の賊なり。
EN
Not using knowledge to govern the nation
JA
智を以て国を治めざるは、
EN
Is the good fortune of the nation.
JA
国の福なり。
EN
He who has knowledge of these two also has them as
JA
この両者を知るもまた
EN
examples.
JA
稽式なり。
EN
To always understand these examples –
JA
常に稽式を知る、
EN
This is called deep and mysterious De.
JA
これを玄徳と謂う。
EN
Deep and mysterious De is so profound! and remote!
JA
玄徳は深く遠し。
EN
That when creatures return, it returns with them!
JA
物と共に反る。
EN
Then they reach the greatest harmony.
JA
然る後に大順に至る。
