The reason that rivers and seas can act as kings of the 100

江海のよく百谷の王たる

valleys
JA
ゆえんは、

Is because they are good at being lower-than them.
JA
その善くこれに下るを以てなり。
EN
Therefore : they can act as kings of the 100 valleys.
JA
故によく百谷の王たり。
EN
Thus the sage :
JA
ここを以て聖人は、
EN
In desiring to be above the citizens,
JA
民に上たらんと欲すれば、
EN
He must by means of his speech be lower-than them.
JA
必ず言を以てこれに下り、
EN
In desiring to be before the citizens,
JA
民に先んぜんと欲すれば、
EN
He must by means of his self be behind them.
JA
必ず身を以てこれに後る。
EN
Thus the sage :
JA
ここを以て聖人は、
EN
Lives above them, but the citizens are not burdened.
JA
上に処るも民重しとせず、
EN
Lives in front of them, but the citizens are not harmed.
JA
前に処るも民害とせず。
EN
Thus the world is pleased to promote him, and does not
JA
ここを以て天下は楽しんでこれを推して
EN
tire of him.
JA
厭わず。
EN
Because he does not strive,
JA
その争わざるを以て、
EN
Therefore no one in the world can strive against him.
JA
故に天下よくこれと争う者なし。
