In the world, all say I am great,

天下みな我を大なりと謂えども、

But do not seem to be like everyone else.
JA
似ざるがごとし。
EN
Now : only because I am not like everyone else, therefore I

それ唯だ大なればこそ、
EN
can be great.
JA
似ざるがごとし。
EN
If I was like everyone else,
JA
もし似たるならば、
EN
Long ago! I would have become insignificant, indeed!
JA
久しきかな、その細なること已に。
EN
Now : I possess three treasures –
JA
我に三宝あり、
EN
Hold and maintain them.
JA
持してこれを保つ。
EN
The first is called compassion,
JA
一に曰く慈、
EN
The second is called economy,
JA
二に曰く倹、
EN
The third is called not daring to act first in the world.
JA
三に曰く敢えて天下の先と為らず。
EN
With compassion, you can therefore be brave.
JA
慈なれば故に能く勇なり。
EN
With economy, you can therefore expand.
JA
倹なれば故に能く広し。
EN
By not daring to act first in the world,
JA
敢えて天下の先と為らざれば、
EN
Therefore you can achieve the capacity for leadership.
JA
故に能く器の長と成る。
EN
At present, people abandon compassion but also try to be
JA
今、慈を捨てて且つ
EN
brave,
JA
勇ならんとし、
EN
Abandon economy but also try to expand,
JA
倹を捨てて且つ広からんとし、
EN
Abandon being behind but also try to be first –
JA
後るることを捨てて且つ先んぜんとす。
EN
This is death!
JA
これ死なり。
EN
Now : when compassion is used in war, the consequence
JA
それ慈を以て戦えば則ち
EN
is victory.
JA
勝ち、
EN
When it is used for protection, the consequence is strength.
JA
以て守れば則ち固し。
EN
When heaven would help you,
JA
天将にこれを救わんとすれば、
EN
Using compassion it protects you.
JA
慈を以てこれを衛る。
