第七十八章
EN
In the world, nothing is softer and weaker than water.
JA
天下に水より柔弱なるものなし。
EN
Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong,
JA
されど堅強を攻むるに、
EN
There is nothing that can surpass it.
JA
よくこれに勝る者なし。
EN
This is because it endlessly replaces itself.
JA
その以てこれに易うるなきを以てなり。
EN
Weakness conquers strength.
JA
弱のよく強に勝ち、
EN
Softness conquers hardness.
JA
柔のよく剛に勝つは、
EN
In the world, there is no one who does not know this,
JA
天下知らざるはなきも、
EN
But there is no one who can practice it.
JA
よく行う者なし。
EN
Thus the sage says :

故に聖人は曰く、
EN
Accepting upon oneself the disgrace of the nation
JA
国の垢を受くるを、
EN
Is called being master of the shrines.
JA
これ社稷の主と謂い、
EN
Accepting upon oneself the misfortune of the nation
JA
国の不祥を受くるを、
EN
Is called being king of the world.
JA
これ天下の王と謂う。
EN
Honest words seem contrary.
JA
正言は反するがごとし。
